Play All Day

Do you play in your daily life? What says “playtime” to you?

I live by the maxim “play all day.”

Raised as an only child with an active imagination, I enjoy a life of the mind. I write—this blog, fanfiction, and hundreds of character sketches that live in my Notion app. I’m a voracious learner, known to deep dive on subjects when I’m passionate.

I can show you that Saturn and Pluto were conjoined in the sky during the Spanish Flu, the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic, and COVID-19. And that it’s the sign opposite your rising sign (not the your sun) that has the most to say about your long-term partnerships. If I think hard enough, I can list all eighteen Targaryen monarchs in chronological order, from Aegon I to Mad King Aerys (and yes, I put Queen Rhaenyra in her proper place, between her brother Aegon II and her son, Aegon III).

I’ve spent the last two years on yin and yang style identities. I know why J. Lo’s infamous green dress was a perfect fit for her Soft Natural frame and Dramatic essence and that Charlie Hunnam, despite his resemblance to Brad Pitt actually shares more in common with Daniel Craig and should stick with sharp, tailored lines instead of the hippie wild man thing he’s doing these days.

I’ve banked at least 100 hours with The Big Picture podcast. I know that Alfred Hitchcock is responsible for the icy blond femme fatale that later shows up in erotic neo-noires like Body Heat and Basic Instinct. And that Brian De Palma was accused of ripping him off. See: Michelle Pfeiffer in the De Palma-directed Scarface.

I work in a “play” industry. When it comes to pairing food and wine, you want to abide by the rule “If it grows together, it goes together.” A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc will sing alongside your buttery white fish, as will a Sangiovese with pizza. On the other hand, if you’re going spicy on the plate, you want to go soft and sweet. Pair a Riesling with your jambalaya and tell me how it goes.

I could go on. But Tyrion Lannister provides the best summation of my idea of “play.”

  1. I was with some friends that I’ve known since I was literally 12 years old and I was telling them about my digital farming games and tarot and reading and writing and stuff and they were like “how do you have time for this” and I’m very much like “how do you not? What else is there to *do*?”
Also I need to see your Notions screenshots cause I just downloaded it yesterday and want to immediately give up cause it’s not working with my Samsung pen…like I don’t have 15 empty notebooks begging for my attention…

    • This is hilarious because a friend said this post was very “Libra-coded behavior.” LOL. I guess she’s right. And I thought it was because I’m single/childless that I had all this time and nope. It’s just if this is how you like to spend your time, you’ll do it. LOL.

My Notion set up is VERY barebones. It’s not a true Evernote replacement (I really miss my voice notes and refuse to give the Google overlord recording permissions), I’ve altered my habits to fit. Namely I just do less digital hoarding. But I’ll slide some of my screenshots in your IG DMs.
